Dear Uncle Phaedrus,
For many years we have very much enjoyed Kasanof’s Onion Rolls which
could be found at many supermarkets in areas of New England. My freezer
supply was depleted so I looked to buy more. Could not find them –
“out of stock” everywhere.
Are these rolls no longer made? These delicious rolls for sandwiches
seemed to be a popular product.
Thank you for any information you can provide.

Hi Karen,
The Kasanof's Onion Rolls story turned out to be a proverbial "can of worms." "Kasanof's" products are
made by "Vermont Bread Company" at their Connecticut location according to the first source I found.
However other sources said the products were made by "Superior Baking Company," also in Connecticut.
Both companies give the same address, and both are owned by "Koffee Kup Bakery". Koffee Kup Bakery had
money problems and declared bankruptcy in April, 2021. They laid off all the employees. All of it's
assets, under multiple names, were to be sold by the bankruptcy trustee, as is the usual procedure.
Several companies were interested, and claimed to be in the process of buying the company and its
assets, but it appears that, in the end, "Flowers Foods" of Georgia was the high bidder. It was hoped
that Flowers Foods would continue selling the popular Koffee Kup Bakery, Vermont Bread Company,
Superior Baking Company, etc. products, but apparently that hasn't happened as yet. All of the
retailers that sold the products, including Kasanof's Onion Rolls, now say "out of stock" or "unavailable".
I could not find information online about Flowers Foods' plans for the product line. They would have
rights to the products and they would have all of the recipes.
My advice to you would be to look for a substitute for the onion rolls. There is no telling whether
Kasanof's rolls will ever be made again. I'll post this for reader input. Perhaps someone has more
information or someone can suggest a brand of onion rolls that tastes similar.
