Have you ever seen a recipe for a Cozart cake? A lady who lived in Graceville, FL
used to make them and they were very popular, and delicious. She passed away and
we’re trying to see if anybody else knows the recipe. The cake is basically a
yellow cake. The icing has a caramel taste with coconut and pecans. It is not the
German Chocolate icing, but similar.
Thanks for any help!

Hi Carolyn,
What was the lady in Graceville, Florida's name who made the cakes?

I can’t remember. It’s probably been ten years or more since she passed away.
I’m sending some messages out to people in hometown to see if they remember.
I’ll let you know what I find out.

Hi Carolyn,
Ok. Let me know. I cannot find any mention at all of a "Cozart Cake", as such, and I can't
see any way to proceed without the lady's name.

I received info that her name was Ludean Helms. Someone also spelled her name Ludine,
but I think it is Ludean. Someone posted a recipe but it doesn’t sound the same, and
uses a cake mix.

Hi Carolyn,
I think it was Ella Ludean Helms, husband Joe Helms.
You say someone posted a recipe? What is the address of that web page? I'd like to look at it.

This recipe uses cream cheese and we don’t think Ludean used cream cheese.
I have someone else who thinks they have her recipe.
I’ll keep you posted.

Hi friend,
My family is from Graceville, FL, and I am very familiar with Cozart Cake,
it being the cake of my childhood.
My great grandmother passed away a few years ago, but she would make it at
every family gathering. Or an aunt would.
The recipe I got from her was a bit different than the one you posted, but the
backstory is that Cozart is the last name of the woman who made the cake popular.
The recipe I have doesn't have any cream cheese, but uses a caramelized pan icing,
yellow cake base, chopped pecans and coconut cooked into the pan icing (sweetened
condense milk, butter, and confectioner's sugar), and then the cake made in many
fine layers (8 or so at 1/3rd inch tall) with icing layers in between and on top.
Attached is a recipe card I found.
Thanks,
Ben
Cozart Cake
1 Duncan Hines Butter Golden Cake Mix
2 cans Carnation Milk
shredded coconut
1-1/2 cups chopped pecans
2 sticks butter
2 cups sugar
Bake cake as directed.
Combine milk, butter and sugar in pot and cook until thickened.
Remove from heat and add pecans and coconut.
Cover cake.
Thanks, Ben!
